Maintaining Your Post Quarantine Beard

After returning to the barbershop, we were surprised at the number of clients who fell in love with their long hair. Man buns, long locks and twists became a common sight. Many of our clients wanted to experiment with longer hair styles and needed advice on

how to maintain their new look. The Fade provide us with a great compromise. We were able to maintain length on the top of the head while executing a flawless fade on the back and sides. However, the beard is a different story. When fielding phone calls, we commonly heard “when are you guys opening?” and “are you able to do beard trims?” Their relief with our reopening was quickly followed by the fear of not being able to have their beard trimmed due to mask mandates. But fortunately, we had protocols in place. Men loved their newfound beards, goatees and handlebar mustaches but unfortunately had new clue on how to maintain them.

What type of products are best for moisturize a beard during the summer months?

Beard oils are perfect during the summer months. High quality beard oils are not heavy and also easily filter through the hair allowing the essential ingredients to coat and moisturize the hair follicle while moisturizing the face underneath. This is critical for health beard growth due to the fact that dry itchy skin can lead to skin irritation and a patchy beard. Pro Tip: We recommend applying beard oil while the beard is moist.  This allows for maximum distribution while locking in moisture.

We recommend Casswell-Massey Heritage Beard Oil, which we carry at ETHOS GSFM.

Is there a particular length that is universal?

We find that while the beard is far more acceptable today verses 15 years ago, a determining factor for length is the gentlemen’s career.  Most white-collar professionals seem to manage a closer more well-groomed beard that gives a more polished look while blue collar professionals can opt for a longer, fuller, more expressive beard.

If a guy has a bushy/large beard, what should he do to keep it

healthy at that length?

One misconception is that you gain length and fullness in your beard by not trimming it.  To the contrary, gentlemen who desire to grow or maintain a full/large beard should have a good conditioning routine and have it regularly trimmed.

Any tips on using a trimmer at home?

I recommend an adjustable clipper and a trimmer for at-home maintenance.  Your barber will be upset if you recklessly hacking you beard, however, every man with a beard knows that there’s are times that you need to clean up your mustache and clean away unwanted hairs along the neckline.

We recommend the Andis Headliner Cutting Kit for at home grooming.

What do I tell my barber if I’m thinking about shaving my beard down, but, want to keep some length?

When trying to maintain length, explain what you don’t like about your beards length. Is your beard overly bushy, unmanageable strays or undesirably shaped? Get specific.
